FREMONT, CA: Waste materials generated by the construction, renovation, and demolition of buildings, roads, and bridges are known as construction and demolition materials. A Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) strategy arose from the EPA identifies using construction and demolition (C&D) materials in new construction projects to decrease the necessity to mine and process virgin materials.

C&D materials institute a significant portion of the United States waste stream. These various C&D materials can be handled for new productive purposes and from the landfill.
EPA's report on trash definition, Advancing Sustainable Materials Management: 2018 Fact Sheet, evaluates the number of materials generated by C&D and the amounts reused or sent to landfills. Steel, wood goods, drywall and plaster, brick and clay tile, asphalt shingles, concrete, and asphalt concrete are discussed in this article. The generation estimates the quantity of C&D materials resulting from the building, renovation, and demolition of roads and other structures. "Next use" means the designed next-use market for a C&D material, which, depending on the material, could be fuel, manufactured products, aggregate, compost, mulch, or soil amendment. Government and industry organizations offer the data utilized to estimate the cost.
RECYCLING CONSTRUCTION & DEMOLITION MATERIALS
Several building materials can be recycled where there are markets. For example, recycling asphalt, concrete, and debris is common.
Wood can be reprocessed into manufactured wood products such as furniture, mulch, and compost. Metals, like steel, copper, and brass, are also valuable recyclable commodities. There are numerous recycling applications for cardboard packaging from residential construction projects, but it is not classified as C&D material. On occasion, recycled materials are improperly managed. Construction firms can guarantee that their materials are handled properly by questioning recyclers about their compliance with state and local regulations, licensing, or registration.
ADVANTAGES OF REDUCING C&D MATERIAL DISPOSAL
Decreasing the amount of construction and demolition waste sent to landfills or incinerators can:
Form employment and economic activity in recycling industries and extend local business opportunities, especially when deconstruction and selective demolition techniques are employed.
Mitigate overall construction expenditures by dodging purchase/disposal costs and donating recovered materials to qualified 501(c)(3) charities, which give a tax deduction. Moreover, onsite reuse reduces transportation costs.
Lower the number of disposal facilities, thus reducing environmental concerns.
Offset the environmental influence of extracting and engrossing virgin resources and producing new materials.
