Global warming caused by small particulate matter and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) can be reduced by leveraging fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) and implementing low carbon hydrogen refuelling stations for longhaul transports.

This belief—shared by three companies, Alpiq, H2 Energy, and Linde—was the driving force behind Hydrospider, which offers a more sustainable fuel solution for longdistance, heavy-duty vehicles.

The production, procurement and logistic of green hydrogen, combined with a slew of refuelling stations, enables Hydrospider to reinforce the value chain of sustainable energy in Switzerland. With its partners, Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility and the Swiss Association H2 Mobility, it has built a business case for more than 100 hydrogen fuelling stations across Switzerland to support the growing FCEV ecosystem, which will power commercial and passenger fuel cell-powered vehicles.

“We aim to decarbonize the fuelling of heavy-duty commercial trucks by creating an ecosystem of hydrogen infrastructure solutions and developing methods of producing green hydrogen from renewable energy,” says Nicolas Crettenand, CEO of Hydrospider.

Hydrospider through its shareholders aims to consistently invest, develop, and expand its portfolio to fuel renewable energy needs for transportation. Green Hydrogen is one of the keys for the energy transition. Exploring more efficient and cost-effective methods of its production and securing a dependable supply of renewable energy-based electricity will pave way for hydrogen-powered vehicles and reduce the dependence on fossil fuels. Recognizing this drive, GS1 Switzerland honoured Hydrospider’s logistics concept for green hydrogen with the Swiss Logistics Award 2021.

Hydrospider’s business initiative contributes significantly to the decarbonization of heavy goods transport. A heavy-duty truck running on climate-friendly green hydrogen and traveling around 80,000 kilometres per year reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 70 to 75 metric tons. The electricity used during the ‘power to gas’ conversion cycle is produced solely by renewable energy from hydro, solar, and wind sources.

The renewable energy ecosystem’s value is emphasized through a core vision of building a sustainable, pollutionfree environment. The focus is on using green hydrogen to decarbonize mobility and power industries. Hydrospider is not looking to disrupt the EV market but to build a joint venture of EV and hydrogen as two viable options, enabling batterypowered commercial vehicles with shortdistance trucks and hydrogen-powered ships, boats, and heavy-duty trucks.

A client’s investments are always secure due to its flexible business model. They are provided robust hydrogen fuel housing based on their requirements and budget. It is also willing to hedge the electricity for a few years in advance, making it a long-term partnership and reducing the risk on both sides.

Hydrospider will fully leverage the Swiss green infrastructure and cater to the mobility demands of the industry. The start-up, with a disruptive and agile team, is contributing to the creation of a hydrogen ecosystem necessary to decarbonize society.
